At Kembara Stories & Food Trail, we believe that food, identity, and culture are interconnected. Our project aims to showcase the culinary heritage of four prominent migrant communities in Malaysia— Nepal, Philippines, Indonesia and Bangladesh. By shedding light on these communities’ cuisine and culture, we hope to transform Downtown Kuala Lumpur into a vibrant, celebrated, and resilient city.
What is the purpose of this program?
Kuala Lumpur has a vibrant and diverse migrant community that has contributed significantly to the cultural fabric of our society. We believe that cultural walking tours led by migrant communities will not only provide a unique perspective on our city’s history and culture but also provide a platform for them to share their experiences and stories.
Our Mission: Celebrating Diversity and Empowering Communities
Migrant communities in Malaysia often face marginalization and are viewed as the “other.” We want to change that narrative. By using migrant cuisines and culture as sources of collective unity, diversity, pride, and a sense of belonging, our project aims to break down negative stereotypes surrounding these communities. Through this initiative, we also want to highlight the shared values and commonalities that we all possess.
Food and cultural storytelling play significant roles in defining a community’s identity. At Kembara Stories & Food Trail, we believe that by showcasing the migrant communities from a different perspective—one that emphasizes their cuisine and cultural heritage—we can bridge the divide and raise awareness about their contributions to Malaysian society.
The migrant community, though often invisible, comprises a substantial portion of the Malaysian population, particularly in Downtown Kuala Lumpur, where their labor is essential to local businesses. These communities are known for their dedication to what are sometimes called “3D jobs”—dirty, difficult, and dangerous tasks. However, despite their indispensable role, they are seldom given the opportunity to tell their own stories or feel included in the country they have called home for years.
Join the journey
Through the pilot Kembara Stories & Food Trail project, we aim to create a digital directory of migrant communities’ cuisine and culture in Downtown Kuala Lumpur. This directory will encompass cafes, food booths, groceries, and restaurants, serving as a platform to promote their diverse culinary offerings. Additionally, by training more migrant worker guides, we can offer paid cultural tours that not only generate income for these workers but also introduce Malaysians and visitors to the rich tapestry of migrant cuisine and culture.
We invite you to join us on the Kembara Stories & Food Trail, where we celebrate diversity, savour exquisite flavors, and embrace the vibrant tapestry of cultures that shape our nation. By participating in this project, you help break stereotypes, build bridges between communities, and empower migrant workers to share their stories. Together, let’s create a more inclusive and united community in Downtown Kuala Lumpur.

HELP US ADVANCE THE CONVERSATION & GROW THIS PROJECT
Project Future Malaysia wants to create conditions to guide an expansive vision of the future for Malaysia. This perspective will include a deeper engagement with science, technology and the various arts of literature, philosophy, film and music. By re-imagining and manifesting better alternatives for Malaysia’s future, we are freed from our everyday assumptions about what is possible. We can then imagine pathways forward which enable us to embrace bolder visions and hopeful possibilities for Malaysia’s future. If you resonate with the vision of this project, we invite you to grow and support this project via collaborations and conversations.
As a not-for-profit venture, we welcome values-aligned funders, partners and collaborators including suggestions of programming, improvements or corrections on this website and project.
